At 23" wide and 14" tall, this cushy, compression molded, foam back support walks the fine line between backband and seatback. Designed to provide both lower back support and upper back support this backrest is an ergonomically advanced seating solution. Our integrated thwart allows for the seatback to pivot conforming to your position. Thermoformed grooves help it curve naturally forming perfectly with our seats. Additional attachment loops provide added customization for you to achieve the perfect height to meet your needs. This Backrest can be installed on new boats as well as retro-fitted to upgrade your Hornbeck. The backrest comes attached to a thwart, and the whole assembly, higher backrest and thwart, replace the stock backrest and thwart that is attached to the boat.

(boat model must be specified when purchasing to assure proper thwart size, unless willing to trim yourself)

FAQ's:

Does it get in the way of my car rack?

The backrest pivots to conform to any car rack. Factory rack or aftermarket, like Yakima.

Can I still shoulder portage it?

The backrest pivots away allowing you to grab the gunwale wood while shoulder carrying.

How much does it weigh compared to the standard backrest?

The XL backrest is 15oz heavier that the standard backrest.

Does it work with PFD's?

As long as you are using a mesh-back kayaking life jacket the backrest will not interfere with comfort.

How do I install it?

  1. Unscrew the old backrest. A flat head screwdriver and pliers may be necessary if tight.
  2. Insert new backrest so that wood is centered on gunwale hole and flush against hull of boat. You may need to flex the boat to get wood to fit properly.
  3. Using 1/8” drill bit, follow the angle of the existing gunwale hole to drill hole through new backrest wood. Using a clamp on the opposite side can make things easier.
  4. Insert bolt with finish washer on top, and hand tighten with wing nut
